Social Web Literacy

We'll be discussing the Social Web and how knowing about it can help us make libraries more relevant to our social web savvy patrons.

In case you hadn't heard, TIME magazine named "You" its Person of the Year for impacting the world more than anyone else in 2006.

"You", in this case, is a synonym for the Social Web. But since YOU are now part of the Social Web, I'd like to say "congratulations!"

(And here's a shameless plug from one blog to another:)
Please read my "Mostly NF" blog about this, us, and "you".

The Social Web is growing by leaps and bounds -- since our last class! Traffic has jumped more than 100% to some of these sites in the last month. I stumbled upon one last week that was created as a minor amusement during the Thanksgiving holiday and it has -- as of this morning -- over 2,000 members already.

I added about a dozen links to the right-hand sidebar and attached a quick label identifying the typical (but by no means ONLY) users. Feel free to browse any that peek your interest but I'd like to draw your attention to a few in particular. [I'm too lazy to hyperlink these paragraphs right now. The hyperlinks on the sidebar work, though.]

Club Penguin is setting itself up as a new virtual world -- a Second Life for the younger set, you might say -- where kids can "waddle around", play games, and interact with other kids. There's a membership fee, though. The original Second Life, meanwhile, continues its phenomenal growth. More and more real-world companies are setting up shops there.

Nancy Pearl has a Book Lust wiki. As of this weekend, PCLS does, too! Andrew and I are fiddling with it now. I'll add it soon.

In the broad social networking category, you'll see that specific social communities are developing. MySpace is still dominant with Facebook #2, but Tweenland is posing as a MySpace for the "tweens", while Eons is going for aging Boomers.

You don't have to be human to have a page! There's over a quarter million dogs posting their pix and comments on Dogster. I tell ya, this part of the web is growing wild!
